“Every year you get better and better.”

That comment by a local nurse probably best summarizes this year’s 2009 North Coast Breast Cancer Conference. It was a huge success in many ways. Maybe the most important was the effect it had on those who attended. Ranging from nurses to patients, from physicians to caregivers, people’s general reaction seemed to follow this attendee’s simple comment:

“This was a great seminar.”

Each year the North Coast Breast Cancer Conference has grown. The growth has been in virtually every aspect of the conference:

      • Attendance
        176 (2007); 350 (2009)
      • Speakers
        5 (2007); 17 (2009)
      • Breakout Sessions
        0 (2007); 28 (2009)
      • Physician Conference
        0 (2007); 23 (2009)

One of the more unique aspects of this year’s conference was the survivor scholarships made available by the Susan G. Komen of Northwest Ohio organization. Through their generosity, any breast cancer survivor who attended the conference did so free of charge. A very special thanks goes to Mary Westphal, Executive Director of the Northwest Ohio affiliate of Susan G. Komen for her leadership in arranging these scholarships.

Kalahari Resort and Conference Center also should be congratulated on their exceptional support for the conference. Whether it was their assistance in marketing the conference or their attention to every detail during the conference, Kalahari’s staff really came through in making this an exceptional experience for everyone in attendance.

Speaking on behalf of the North Coast Cancer Foundation, the organizing force behind the conference, Board Chairman Dr. Steve Roshon summarized this way: “What a remarkable effort on everyone’s part. Two years ago we would have never dreamed that we would see such a large turnout or that we could provide such a wide range of presenters. With speakers from as far away as UCLA, Harvard, Indiana University and Chicago, this conference has truly become one of the very best in the country. In fact, we believe it is now the largest in the State of Ohio. What a wonderful asset to our community.”

The comments of nurses and survivors probably tell the story best:

  • “This was a great program. I almost dismissed the mailing. I will recommend to my co-workers next time”
  • “Excellent program – you’ll see me next year.”

The next North Coast Breast Cancer Conference is scheduled for October 2, 2010. For more information on this year’s conference or to get details about the 2010 conference, please call 419-609-2888.

* “The attendance at the 2009 North Coast Breast Cancer Conference now makes it the largest general audience conference in the State of Ohio,” stated Conference Coordinator, Jeff Krabill. “We are very proud of our efforts to help patients and educate healthcare professionals. That has been our goal all along.”
